Behind the Design: Leather Gilet

Our resident design protegé, Fflur Owen, talks through the designs of the new season’s collection, starting with one of our most coveted outerwear pieces from the new collection…

Washed Leather Gilet

“This is the most exciting piece for me as I love working with leather. This shrunken washed leather gilet with exaggerated collar is the ultimate piece to finish any outfit! Each gilet goes through a complicated process of washing the leather to create a slightly different finish and shape insuring each piece is individual. ”

“The gilets are sewn as normal, but as we know that the leather will shrink in the washing process so they are originally made slightly larger. This is a very long and complicated process for the pattern cutters; they have to work through lots of calculations to predict how much the leather will shrink. As we all know leather is a natural fibre and it is extremely difficult to control. Every piece of leather can react in a different way in the washing process, therefore it takes a lot of patience and experimenting to get it right.”

“Our gilet includes 24 individually sewn panes of leather, but no two pieces will be the same. We think it makes a great summer cover-up as it emphasises the feminine form, but also keeps that Karen Millen edge.”

  1. The washed leather gilet also looks great on a front face teamed with the butterfly print maxi dress-both from the new collection Modern Sports.
